Shine On!
We took a shine to these glossy lacquer goods that range from a red-hot screen with fancy fretwork, to mod miniature bookcase units fit for a nursery more Miles van der Rohe than Mary Poppins. Lacquer techniques date back to ancient Asian cultures and it's currently making a kicky comeback. This shinny happy material marries well with clean, modern shapes but, as William Switzer's signature Palazzo Capponi console demonstrates, it can also provide a striking contrast to ornate period pieces. Any way you color it, lacquer is the queen of sheen.
